How can I take a screen-shot from an anime?

Let’s prepare one:

  • We will use Media Player Classic (MPC) for taking a screen-shot (SS). Of course you can use another application. It is up to you.
  • First we will run MPC.
  • Select “View*Options…*Output”
  • Here, you’ll see a few options for “Directshow Video Output”. For taking SS we will use “Haali's Video Renderer”. If there are some problems with video display you can select VMRs instead. They would work too.
  • Push “OK”.
  • We will generally use PNG files as screenshots (I know they're bigger than JPEGs but this is required for good quality screenshots) Now if you didn’t save a SS before with MPC (if you’re reading this probably not of course) default screenshot file type is BMP. If you changed to JPEG than do these steps:
    • First open any video. Pause in any screen then select “File*Save Image…”
    • Here you’ll see MPC tries to save image as “Bmp” type. Change “Save as type” to “Bitmaps”
    • Save SS. You can delete this file later. Remember the folder you saved your SS. This folder will be default folder for SS.
  • Now, MPC is ready to take SS.
  • Open your anime. Usually you will take 5-10 SS for an episode.
  • Seek to time you want to take SS. You could also use Step button to select appropriate frame. When you’re satisfied, pres “F5”. You’ll see the screen captured as “snapshot<date><time>.bmp”
  • BTW, window size doesn’t matter when you capture a SS. The size of the image will be same as video resolution. If a video is 1920x1080 then even when you don’t have a capable monitor and watching it in a 1024x768 resolution, SS will have resolution of 1920x1080.
  • After file saved go to SS folder. Open it with “Microsoft Paint”
  • Select “File*Save As...”. Change “Save as type' to “PNG”.
  • Click “Save”. A word of caution: Do not try to upload BMP file to system, it will fail if you do that.
  • That’s all. Now you are ready to upload this file to Fansub Screenshot Comparison System.

Now an example. I’ll take SS from “Kujibiki Unbalance”.

  • First, I’m opening “Kujibiki Unbalance (2006) - 01v2 - 1st Draw - Everyone, Got Surprised at School. 7 Points [yu][0C1B8A1C].mkv” from Windows Explorer.
  • Here it is:
  • Now I’m selecting a scene for comparison. This scene is good. It has anime's title and a sample from karaoke. After pausing I'm pressing “F5”:
  • As you can see the file is saved as 'c:\users\plato\pictures\screenshots\snapshot20080724232322.bmp'.
  • We have to upload a PNG file so let's open that file with 'Microsoft Paint'
  • After that, I'm saving it as a PNG file. (snapshot20080724232322.png)
  • Now, I can upload this file when the time comes.

How can I upload a screen-shot to Fansub Comparison System.

Let’s do it:

  • First, select “Add Screenshot” from interface. You’ll see a screen like this:
  • Type anime name to ANIME NAME text box. The text box will try to guess anime name. If you don’t see any name / id then it’s probably not an anime :)
  • Type group name to GROUP NAME text box. Again if you don’t see any name / id then the group name is probably wrong. Check again.
  • In the first box under the “ADD” button, you’ll see episode number. If it’s a movie then set it to '00' but if it’s a TV serie or OVA change the episode number to match SS.
  • In the second box you’ll select file from your HDD to upload. Please upload only anime screen-shots.
  • After the “Browse…” button you’ll set time for SS in episode. It’s formatted as hour/minute/second.
  • Then set the language for SS (generally subtitle language)
  • Under the episode number you'll see another selection. Choose video compression from here. If video file is an AVI file it must be XviD, else it's probably H264, but it could be XviD too. Please check the video properties to be sure.
  • You could add more than one SS per session. If you pres “ADD” button, there will be another line added after last row. You could add as many as you like. Also you could pres “REMOVE” to remove a line.
  • After that pres “UPLOAD!” button and voila!
  • Please upload at least 5 SS per group for any episode.

Let’s do an example: (I will upload the SS from the example before.)

  • First I’ll fill the required fields:
  • You remember the SS from previous example was from “00:28”. As you can see from the subtitle, we set language to English. Also I know this is a DivX coded file (it's a MKV packed divx file) so I set “Format” to “XviD”
  • Now I’m pressing “UPLOAD!”… and here it is:
  • Well, this is not enough.. Don’t you think? Let’s add another SS from another group for comparison. This time from Exiled-Destiny. Again from same episode / same time. Here it is:
  • You see, there are some differences. We said same time but Exiled-Destiny uses DVD source instead of TV so it is same frame but not same time by seconds. This could happen sometimes when groups encode differently. Try to choose same frame from all groups before uploading. There are karaoke on this video too but it continues after title screen so we don't see that on this screen.
  • Again, let’s fill the fields from “Add Screenshot” section...
  • And then, 'Upload'
  • That's all folks!

How can I compare groups for any anime?

Let’s do it:

  • First type an anime name to “Anime search bar” (H). If anime has an SS for comparison you’ll see a green check mark instead of “?” right of the search bar.
  • Click on the green check mark.
  • or...
  • Click “List” from menu
  • Select anime you want to see SS of

After opening the anime SS screen you'll see the interface.. Let's learn how to use it through an example:

  • We entered two Kujibiki Unbalance SS. But there are some titles entered with more SS. Let's see “Hakaba Kitarou” (Graveyard Kitarou)'s SS page.
  • First, I'm opening up the “List
  • Then I click “Graveyard Kitarou”. We use English titles for Animes if available. If you don't know English title for an anime you can still look up from Anime search bar.
  • This is the screen I get:
  • Now, click the frames you want to compare. When you click, the frames will be rounded up by a blue bar.
  • Then click “Compare” from “Toolbox” from right. This toolbox will come with you when you scroll the screen.
  • This is the screen we got:
  • You can scroll up/down left/right to see rest of the images.
  • After that, press <Esc> key to close “Compare” screen.
  • You can click “Reset” from “Toolbox” to start over another comparison.
